[AlterNet]: A new report [PDF] released from Good Jobs First this week shows that Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, has received more than $1 billion in economic development subsidies from states for its stores and distribution centers.
I’ve never understood that lame excuse for economic development ‘strategy’ that consists of cities/counties/states competeing to see who can grovel lower and give away more in the quest to attract business. Nor have I understood the so called pro-free market, anti-big government who can conveniently change ideology when the taxpayers money winds up in their – or their buddies’ – pockets.
Actually I do understand it. I just don’t like it. Why can’t you ever find a capitalist around when you need one?
