Arizona Public Service, a leading power producer, required assistance in developing a strategy to tap the opportunities and see the challenges in pursuing sustainability.

Natural Logic’s objective is to support APS by evaluating its “sustainability” and “social responsibility” initiatives, and identifying both opportunities to improve their effectiveness and value contribution, and strategies to integrate them profitably into operations. We proposed the following course of action:

1: Meet with APS Environmental Health and Safety and Corporate Social Responsibility staff for one to two days of facilitated identification, characterization and discussion of issues and opportunities – both current views and potential changes.

2: Guided by that discussion, Natural Logic conducted:

  • an executive briefing and dialog on strategic sustainability
  • a critical review and assessment of APS’s past, current and planned CSR/sustainability goals,
  • programs, initiatives, metrics and performance
  • interviews with key APS management and staff, to evaluate aspirations, awareness and practices
  • an evaluation of the PNW Corporate Responsibility Report
  • a gap analysis comparing APS programs with comparable companies worldwide

Natural Logic then:

  • presented a summary presentation offering findings, evaluations and prioritized recommendations
  • facilitated a day-long strategy charrette with APS sustainability staff and key stakeholders to consider those recommendations, and to design pathways to effective implementations
  • offered a half-day, all-hands workshop to engage the entire organization in the sustainability mission; get everyone “on the same page” with sound basic knowledge of what, why and how, and guide them in putting those ideas to work in their jobs
