Also huge: Proposition 89, on the California ballot this fall, to stop the legalized bribery of massive money in politics.
Case in point: AT&T and other telecom companies are spending more than $1600 per day per California legislator to win the day for their sides view of the cable company vs telephone company video franchise debate. That’s not a typo; $1600 per day per legislator — more than five times what those people are paid! I haven’t studied or taken sides in the video franchise debate — but I don’t need to in order to know how bad this smells, and how corrosive to the political process this can be.
It’s time to buy back democracy, folks. (This might just be the most important political issue of the year, given the impact it could have on political campaigns in the future.)
